Open Question: MATERNITY LEAVE OPTIONS FOR FINANCIAL HELP?
hi, i am asking for a friend of mine who works with me. she is leaving soon for maternity, however we work at a small, locally owned store which is unable to provide any benefits (insurance, health care, etc). she is unsure of the options and the best way to go about getting financial help. we looked up stuff on gov. websites and family help sites, but it is confusing! anyone with experience, could you tell us whether maternity disability is available with unemployment, if it would be better to apply for one BEFORE the other for longer help, or both at once? or even if there are better options?! any help would be appreciated!! thanks for your time guys!
just a quick side note: this is 1: not for me. 2: a simple question. i am stating this because the first persons answer seems like a personal attack about not being better prepared, which i cannot do anything about seeing as i am not the one pregnant. i’m just trying to help a friend here. please be kind. i appreciate all other answers, thank you for taking the time!!

Open Question: Why do “socialist” countries always rank as the happiest countries in the world?
The happiest taxes on earth

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (MarketWatch) — Northern Europeans are the happiest people on the planet, according to a new survey.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says people in Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands are the most content with their lives. The three ranked first, second and third, respectively, in the OECD’s rankings of “life satisfaction,” or happiness.

There are myriad reasons, of course, for happiness: health, welfare, prosperity, leisure time, strong family, social connections and so on. But there is another common denominator among this group of happy people: taxes.

Northern Europeans pay some of the highest taxes in the world. Danes pay about two-thirds of their income in taxes. Why be so happy about that? It all comes down to what you get in return.

………………..

It says social welfare programs include health insurance, health and hospital services, insurance for occupational injuries, unemployment insurance and employment exchange services. There’s also old age and disability pensions, rehabilitation and nursing homes, family welfare subsidies, general public welfare and payments for military accidents. Moreover, maternity benefits are payable up to 52 weeks.

Simply, you pay for what you get. Taxes in the U.S. have taken on a pejorative association because, well, we are never really quite sure of what we get in return for paying them, other than the world’s biggest military.

But I thought Republican talking point #203 said that people living in “Socialist” countries were miserable and envied our lives here in the U.S?
Maybe because in those Nordic countries they value life more then money.
What evidence do you people have that their form of government cannot work here?? You have no evidence because it was never tried in the first place and you cannot give an example of a country where it didn’t work.

Resolved Question: What to do while pregnant?
I asked this once before but didn’t get many responses….
I’ll try to make it short:
I am 6 months pregnant. Have a job I like but hate my boss! No room for advancement!!! Get paid $17,000 yearly (37.5 hrs/12 months). Current job has poor health coverage, get 6 weeks off for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for a c-section. Planned to be a SAHM after son is born but economic times are tough. I am covered under my husbands health insurance which is great. Received a notice of two current open positions in a local school distract. Position one is $19,000 (35 hrs/10 months) and Position two is $27,000 (40hrs/12months). Not sure about changing jobs during pregnancy? Anyone experience a job change while pregnant? Good vs. Bad ?? Do I attempt the switch? What about maternity leave when I haven’t worked for a long period of time at the new job if I got it? The pay is an increase and the health insurance would be better. Advice/Stories PLEASE!
