To add a little background, I’m just a mental girl – diagnosed with depression since 2004 by my pediatric and have been on and off of prozac. I’ve had for quite some time little to no desire to live, but have been somewhat ok with treatment (40mg) for my depression right now. My parents seem to think I’m doing alright to start tapering off the medication, and my dad is a doctor so he knows a little bit. He’s a gynecologist, though so it’s not his specialty. Today, I went to the Student Health Services at my college university for an evaluation on suspected ADD that my pediatric doctor had spoken to me about. Instead, the internal medicine doctor I was referred to gave me names to follow up with the potential diagnosis. On a different note, we were also talking about my history of depression and the fact that I hadn’t been feeling so great lately, partly due to me forgetting to take my meds for a little bit, but instead of the effects happening while the stuff was out of my system, I began to feel even worse right away. I’m back on the meds, and my doctor prescribed to me +20mg, for a total of 60mg/day. I’m not sure who to believe, my dad more specifically or the doctor I saw today. A little bit of the symptoms I was encountering stemmed from a party (.25 BAL) about a week and a half ago, and I haven’t drank since. I haven’t been feeling the greatest, and within the past couple days, I felt the compulsion to cut myself. I don’t have a plan for suicide, however, at least not yet. How much prozac should I be taking? Should I stick with the 40 or go up to 60? I have both 40 and 20 mg pills on hand. I was also referred to see a psychiatrist, but if I go i need to pick one from the list I was given for insurance purposes…
