Open Question: SHOULD I JOIN THE NAVY?
I’m 18 years old and a senior in high school. I am also a girI. i got accepted to CSULB with a scholarship for free music lessons. I’m a fantastic tuba player and my music teachers have very VERY high hopes of me becoming a great professional musician.

However,

The navy is looking for musicians right now. Joining would really help pay for college. my family is really struggling with money. we don’t have insurance so i know the benefits the extend to them would really help. And I think there’s an incredible sense of pride for serving our country and wearing the uniform of a true hero. I also love the ocean even though its mysteriousness is remotely terrifying.

I haven’t told my parents because i don’t want to worry them. My mom would be devastated for having me gone for so long. I know this would immensely affect my mother. She is already very stressed out so i don’t know if this is something that i could do to her. i think it would be a greater health risk for her than myself.

I’m also in a serious relationship with my boyfriend of 2.5 years. there’s no doubt that our relationship would make it through but i see him every day and we are together all the time. I went to mexico for a week and that seemed nearly unbearable. i can only imagine how being away for months could be.

I have spoken to few people about this. They all support me and think that if it’s something i really want i should go for it. they tell me i’m strong enough, determined enough, and have the mental and emotional capacity to not only be in the navy but do very well in it. I think these things to.

I’m very torn. because i want to go. but i wish i was one of those lost kids without any real goals. because i would have to drop my relationships and if i actively serve may have to postpone my academic goals.
i love being challenged, but this decision affects me as much as my loved ones.

what should i do? please help.
