I agree that these plans are great for students. I sell quite a bit of these plans to students at the local college in Utah here (University of Utah) and they are priced right, include catastrophic coverage, and they are quick and easy to get setup. Typically students don’t need all the bells and whistles. Mostly they are young, healthy people with a limited health insurance budget.

Here in Washington, if you are denied coverage for a health insurance plan due to a preexisting condition, you are luckily automatically qualified for guaranteed coverage in the State High Risk Pool. This plan known as WSHIP (Washington State Health Insurance Pool) operates just like a regular health insurance plan, and is operated by the major health insurance companies in Washington and overseen by the State Insurance Commissioner. The only difference from “regular” plans is that the rates are higher, to compensate for the additions cost of covering people with preexisting conditions. However, at least there is a guaranteed option in Washington State for those with serious health conditions!

Wish I’d had insurance for my pup who had to be put down recently. We had it originally, but at $70 per month for two dogs we didn’t think we could justify it. But when one of them suddenly became gravely ill we were talking $5,000 just to have a blood transfusion and hospital stay to stabilize him enough to have him diagnosed, with no assurance that he would even survive that process. You never think it will happen to your dog. $35 a month seems a really small price now. We miss him so much.
