Voting Question: What would an opponent of universal health care do if he lost his insurance?
So, he loses the job he has because it’s been outsourced to another country or it just went bankrupt. He tries looking for another job, but America’s unemployment rate is now actually higher than Britain’s and Norway’s (that’s a fact!). He can’t get COBRA insurance if the company no longer exists, but he does manage after months of scrambling to find another job, but it’s minimum wage and offers no benefits. He tries to apply for private insurance, but he’s got a pre-existing condition, and the companies either deny him or tell him that they’re going to charge him more than his monthly salary (my wife’s policy with Blue Cross would be $1,300 per month with her condition); he can’t get state aid because he earns over $1,000 per month. He did save, but his savings are running out and he needs coverage for a chronic condition. What can he do? He can’t buy it privately, the state won’t take him on their rolls, the jobs he’s finding don’t offer benefits, he’s running out of savings and he’s getting desperate. Does he go to his 7-11 job everyday and thank God that he’s an American and not some poor Canadian or Australian with no freedom?

Voting Question: Why are necessities, such as food, clothing and shelter mostly affordable, but not health insuarnce?
Can’t figure it out. Here in Tempe if a man were to work 80 hours a week and earn minimum wage with no benefits (remember, we have nine-percent unemployment now, higher than Belgium, Australia and Norway, mind you), he could bring in about $2,000 per month before taxes. He can get a studio for under $500 or a rented room for a little less; one month’s worth of groceries, if purchased at the 99 Cent Store or Food City, could run him $250 per month, and a week of clothing purchased at Goodwill might run him about $100. All affordable, many options for the low-wage earner. Now, this guy actually works for a living maximum hours, so he doesn’t qualify for state aid (I’ve looked into it, that salary is too high), and many jobs don’t offer benefits, particularly low-skilled ones, so what’s he to do? Let’s say he has a pre-existing condition, therefore, he is either denied insurance outright or charged well over $1,000 per month (look at Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Golden Rule, Aetna, Cigna and United). So, he works for a living, doesn’t smoke, no woman will have sex with him, he has no children, he doesn’t do drugs, he has no gadges (iPod, computer, stereo), no car (he takes the bus), even after all that, he’s still screwed. He needs preventative care, not emergency ward treatment as that’s not financially viable for America long term, so what does he do: job offers no benefits, is denied or overcharged for health insurance, can’t find a job with benefits, state won’t provide the working man with state insurance…shouldn’t he just quit working and become the welfare leach that conservatives revile because hard work is getting him nowhere?

Resolved Question: How can I have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness if I can’t access preventative care?
State won’t take me (I’ve tried); job that I have now offers no benefits and can’t find another one with benefits, COBRA is running out, got a pre-existing condition…am lucky as I earn $1,300 per month even after overtime…but I pay $495 a month for my studio apartment; grocery bills cost me about $250 a month (I budget by going to the 99 Cent Store and Food City); I’ve got basic clothing, nothing fancy, bought a week’s worth for just over $100 at Goodwill and Buffalo Exchange; don’t have any gadgets, no computer, no car, no iPod, no fancy booze, no cigarette smoking…use the computer at the public library…always pay my electric bill, always buy a monthly pass for the bus; got an old TV a friend gave me a long time ago and an old radio I bought secondhand; never gamble, don’t use drugs, but Blue Cross/Blue Shild is telling me that the policy I had when I was working my old job would cost at least $1,300 per month…that’s my entire monthly salary after taxes with overtime! What the…?

Twitter Well, a letter from Blue Cross. Looks like a good lot of the equipment I had to get is “not an eligible benefit”. That’s gonna suck.
