Resolved Question: Is my doctor more interested in her pocket or my health?
I recently went for my annual physical. When my results came back, I got a call from my doctor’s office saying “you need to make another appointment to come in and discuss your results.” I said, “I don’t need an appointment, we can discuss it on the phone.” The nurse said she’d talk to the doctor and call me back – of course she never did. About a week later, I get an email from the actual doctor herself saying “your cholesterol was very high, that’s why I need you to make an appointment – please contact my office.” I responded with “my cholesterol has always been very high, as you can see by my patient file. You know my history and you have my new blood results, so I defer to you for treatment/meds. If you still need to speak with me, please call – it will be a 5 minute conversation.” Actually I was thinking – if it took her 5 minutes to type this email, couldn’t she have called just as easily? Anyway, when she didn’t call after a week, I called her office. The nurse said “the doctor has prescribed Crestor, but you MUST make an appointment for 4 weeks from now, to follow up with the doctor”. So, she will give me the meds I need ONLY if I agree to come back to see her in a month – “why? I ask the nurse, “that’s just how she works” was the response. So, she get’s paid for my physical exam, roughly $750, but she still wants to charge me for another office visit – about $200 – to tell me my results… unbelievable.
Now, when I go to pick up my meds, the girl rings me up and says “that will be $107.00 please. “WHAT? Are you friggin’ kidding me here! So I said “no, I have insurance,” she said “yes, that IS with insurance.” I ask, “may I please have generic?” she answers “no, your doctor did not approve generic.” I say “isn’t that MY choice?” she says “yes, but your Dr. has to note that you have that option, and she did not note that on yours.” I walked out without the drugs. The next day I call my dr. office and the nurse says “oh, so you WANT generic?” I said “why would I NOT want generic?” nurse says “it’s your choice.” When I explained what the pharmacy had said about the dr. having to note that on the prescription, the nurse says “it’s true, the dr. always wants her patients to use the brand name if possible.” I said “why, is there a difference” she said, “other than cost, not really.” Not wanting to be argument, I left it at that. I have Blue Cross, but I have a super high deductible. I understand certain meds require follow up, but I’ve had high cholesterol all my life so I know the drill.
So, am I nuts here? Are doctors these days being trained to jack up their fees by scheduling unnecessary follow up appointments for stuff they can easily get done with a phone call? With the cost of health care so high, shouldn’t they be looking to make being healthy more affordable instead of more expensive? And are they really pushing certain drugs on us due perks they get from the drug companies?
This is a private doctor in Century City who’s patients consist of mostly working professionals. In what should be such a noble profession, it makes me cringe to think what other doctors are doing to people less educated than myself who don’t have the presence of mind to ask.. “why do I need this?”

Voting Question: What is the best and most affordable company for health coverage for young couple in California?
My company pays 100% of my health coverage but not my wife’s. Thus, we are starting to look for best health coverage for us both and my company will reimburse us for the amount they pay for me now. We are both 28 years old and healthy. We will be trying to have a baby soon so this is greatest concern.
What company is best? Blue Cross? Health Net (which is what I have now)? How much does coverage cost for both of us?
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
Resolved Question: Affordable, good health insurance in Georgia?
I buy my own health insurance. Currently I am being ripped off by Blue Cross Blue Shield! They suck and they are very expensive. Anyone know a better health insurance that is not too expensive?
I am a 27 year old female that makes $300 a week (just got laid off to part-time)
My company does not offer sh*t! They are a small company of 7 people.
