Open Question: Are Canadians as clueless about the American health care system as Americans are about the Canadian one?
As a Canadian on this forum, I often see the most outlandish claims about our health care system and wonder how anyone could believe them. Like claims that we have government bureaucrats controlling which doctor we go to (single payer means that our health care system receives government funding, but our health care system is controlled by a board of directors that has nothing to do with the government). I also see claims that we have death panels, can die waiting for life saving surgery, it can take up to a month to see a regular doctor (I make next-day appointments with mine), that our hospitals are decrepit and falling apart, that we have wait lists just to get a family doctor, that our doctors and nurses are severely underpaid, etc, etc. From my personal experience and work within the Canadian health care system, I know that these claims are false. However, there are Americans who will look at one story in one Canadian town and decide that that is what our health care system is for all Canadian citizens all of the time.
Anyways, I’m wondering if we are all as off about what American health care is like up here. From what I understand about American health care, I can pay thousands of dollars a year in insurance premiums, tens of thousands if my employer doesn’t help to cover the expense. And if I want to go in to see my family doctor or get some sort of treatment, I may have to pay a “co-pay.” And if I’m uninsured, I can go to an ER and get treatment if I’m in a car accident, but if I have cancer and need ongoing treatment, I either pay or am screwed (so to speak). I’ve also heard that, many times, American doctors will order tests or treatments that are not required just so that they can bill insurance companies for more, which drives up everyone’s premiums in the end. Along with all of this, I’ve heard that the US is still short in specialists, which is the only plague to the Canadian system right now, and there are very long wait times in ER’s. I’ve also heard that insurance companies essentially control whether or not an insured person will receive care, and will try to find a way to deny the most expensive treatments. Lastly, I have heard that there are people living in the US who will not take a job with another company that would mean a step ahead, because they would lose their insurance and have fear of not being covered by another insurance company.
Anyways, how much of this is accurate, and how much of it is talking out of my butt? I’m just curious as to whether us Canadians are as clueless as American health care as Americans are about ours.
Why do Americans always have to take one case and treat it like it’s the be all end all for understanding Canadian health care? There has not yet been any information released as to why Danny Williams went to the US for care, but I can say that when my father needed urgent heart surgery here in Canada, he got it without traveling. Honestly, I think that he is going to the US for treatment because he was either on a wait list for an elective or non-urgent surgery, or he is going for something that he could have gotten immediately in Canada, but wanted to see one of the best specialists in the world and could afford to see him. From personal experience, he would have gotten good treatment, start to finish, here. Why I am even defending anything? Obviously, the intelligence level of anyone who would take my question and turn it into an excuse to bring up the Danny Williams case must be pretty low. After all, anyone who would do that can’t read a simple question.
To I speak with a forked tongue…Canada has the highest percentage of university educated citizens in the world. We are, in fact, the most educated country in the world.
Open Question: Family legal trouble?
Hi, this may be a long story, if you have the time to read it I would appreciate it, I will try to be as brief as possible.
So i am 21 and the youngest of 5 siblings, 3 out of the five are half siblings from my dads first marriage.
My mom and dad bought a house in marriage shortly before I was born and put this house under the names of me and my older sister. (This is in Bolivia).
My dad borrowed 400,000$ of which he paid back 200,000$.
Now, about ten years later, my parents are divorced and the people who 200grand is still owed to sewed my sis and I for our house. This is about 3 years ago, shortly before we finished high school and moved to the US to go to university.
We gave my half brother a legal power so he could rent the house and pay my dad the rent so he could survive of the money (my dad is 70), fix the house, sell it and pay the dept. The house is worth about 340,000. So the remainding money would correspond to my sis and I.
What my sis and I wanted to do was to buy and apartment for each my mom and dad who are both economically unstable, health insurance and then get a third apartment we could rent so they could have an income (in boliva it is possible to buy three small apartments with 140,000)
Sooo here is the catch, my brother moved into the house, lived there for three years and said his friends who were living there with him were fixing the house and paying for my dads stuff. Later he said this is not true, that he has been paying for my dads stuff and that after the house is sold we owe him like 21,000 for all the money he had to give to my dad. Now he wants to sell two thirds of the house to someone for 160,000, he says the house is worth 270,000.
I took away my half of the power and gave it to my mom, but MY MOM is emotionally unstable asides from being economically unstable and doesnt really have the strength to handle the thing, it gets worst when I think she is been taking some type of sleeping pills or pain killers because many times she doesnt make sense, but thats besides the point, I did that to take the power from my brother.
So now I am trying to hire a lawyer at a distance to help me deal with this, I would like any sort of advice, this is really troubling me because I am currently in Cali and working and going to school, I dont wanna dropp everything and move back to fight for some mistakes my parents made. I know that my dads kids dont give a f about him, I dont wanna see him be sent to a home, I dont make the money to support him. My mom still works although she also needs some support.
This lawyer I talked to seems to understand the situation and says that the problem can be solved, but its gonna cost me money. I LOVE my parents I would do anything for them but at the same time I feel so shitty for having to be responsible for them, I feel like I should be working on my own life, college, my future, I dont care for that house for myself, I mean i didnt bust my butt to buy it right? Its just pretty much all my parents have.
How can I deal with this without being so stressed and bummed out? What is the right thing? Isnt my brother a freaking jack$@#%?
Open Question: Individual health insurance for a couple with one healthy teen–high-deductible or low-deductible?
I quit my job and I can continue with a decent health insurance plan for my family under COBRA, or I can switch to an individual plan. Being over 50, my wife is supposed to have over $500 of routine tests in a year, otherwise she’s pretty healthy. My son and I are in pretty good health. Any payments we make would be deducted from my wife’s salary before taxes. Our marginal income tax rate, including state tax, is about 19%. Would we be better off with low deductible and high premiums or the reverse? The COBRA plan is fairly low deductible and high premiums.
